Ingredients
- 1 pound Italian sausage (casings removed)
- 1 medium onion (chopped)
- 3 cloves garlic cloves (minced)
- 3 cups chicken broth (low sodium preferred)
- 12 ounces penne pasta (uncooked)
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup Parmesan cheese (grated)
- 0.5 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- 0.25 teaspoon black pepper (freshly ground, or to taste)
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley (chopped, for garnish (optional))
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet or pot over medium heat and add the sausage, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the sausage and cook until softened, about 3 minutes.
- Pour in the chicken broth and bring to a simmer.
- Add the uncooked pasta, stirring to submerge it in the liquid. Cover and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Once the pasta is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed, reduce heat to low and stir in the cream and grated Parmesan cheese.
- Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce is creamy and heated through. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired and serve immediately.
Tips
Verify that the pasta is fully cooked and the sausage reaches a safe internal temperature (160°F/71°C) during cooking.
