Oven to Air Fryer Conversion
An air fryer is a compact convection oven with strong airflow. Most oven recipes work with lower temperature and less time — but crowning, steaming, and large roasts still belong in a full oven.
Starting formula
- Temperature: reduce oven temp by about 25°F (≈15°C).
- Time: start at 70–80% of the oven time, then check early.
- Oil: a light coat is usually enough; you rarely need deep-fry amounts.
Examples
| Oven | Try in air fryer |
|---|---|
| 400°F for 30 min | 375°F for 20–24 min, shake/flip once |
| 350°F for 45 min (casserole) | Often better left in the oven — shallow pans only |
| 425°F roasted veg 25 min | 400°F for 14–18 min, single layer |
When not to convert
- Large whole birds or big roasts that won’t fit with airflow around them.
- Bakes that need gentle, even heat (tall cakes, custards).
- Recipes that rely on steam or a covered Dutch oven.
